Why Goddess Durga and Goddess Kali Have The Three Eyes? – Tri-Nayana Symbolism
The Three Eyes of Divine Feminine Power: Understanding Tri-Nayana Symbolism in Goddess Durga and Kali
In Hindu tradition, Goddess Durga and Goddess Kali are portrayed with three eyes, a profound symbol that transcends ordinary human perception. This tri-nayana (three-eyed) form represents the supreme consciousness that perceives all dimensions of existence simultaneously. Unlike mortal vision limited to the physical realm, the three eyes of the Goddess embody cosmic awareness, divine illumination, and the power to witness the entirety of creation across all temporal boundaries.
The Threefold Luminaries: Sun, Moon, and Fire
The three eyes correspond to the three primary sources of light that govern existence. The right eye represents the Sun (Surya), symbolizing the active, dynamic principle that governs day and worldly activities. The left eye embodies the Moon (Chandra), representing the passive, cooling principle that rules the night and the subtle dimensions of consciousness. The central eye, positioned on the forehead, represents Fire (Agni), the transformative force associated with twilight, spiritual awakening, and divine insight.
As stated in the Mahanirvana Tantra: “Shashi-suryagnibhir netrair akhilam kalikam jagat, Sampashyati yatah tasmat kalpitam nayana-trayam” (Mahanirvana Tantra, Thirteenth Ullasa, Verse 8). Through her three eyes—Moon, Sun, and Fire—she perceives the entire universe born of Time, and therefore she is depicted with three eyes.
Mastery Over Time and Creation
The Goddess is Kalarupini—the embodiment of Time itself. Through these three luminaries, all cosmic processes unfold: creation (srishti), preservation (sthiti), and dissolution (samhara). Day arises from solar influence, night from lunar energy, and the transitional periods of dawn and dusk from fire. This cyclical movement orchestrates all worldly phenomena including growth, decay, and regeneration.
The three eyes enable the Goddess to simultaneously witness the past, present, and future. This omniscient vision reflects her role as the supreme controller of temporal existence. She is not bound by linear time but exists as the eternal witness to all that was, is, and shall be.
The Crescent Moon: Symbol of Immortality
The Mahanirvana Tantra further states: “Nityayah kala-rupaya avyayah shivatmanah, Amritatval lalate’sya shashi-chihnam nirupitam” (Mahanirvana Tantra, Thirteenth Ullasa, Verse 7). She is eternal, without beginning or end, unchanging in her essential nature. She is Shivatmika—the essence of auspiciousness itself. As a mark of her immortal nature, the crescent moon adorns her forehead, signifying that she transcends death and decay.
Spiritual Illumination and Inner Awakening
The three eyes also represent levels of knowledge and consciousness. The two physical eyes perceive the material world of duality, while the third eye represents transcendental wisdom (jnana) that perceives unity beyond diversity. This inner eye, when awakened through spiritual practice, allows devotees to perceive divine truth directly.
In yogic tradition, this third eye corresponds to the ajna chakra, the command center of consciousness located between the eyebrows. The Goddess’s third eye symbolizes the fully awakened state of consciousness that every spiritual seeker aspires to attain—a state of complete awareness, unbound by illusion or ignorance.
Destruction of Ignorance
The third eye of Goddess Kali particularly emphasizes the destructive aspect of divine wisdom. It is said that when fully opened, this eye releases the fire of knowledge that burns away avidya (ignorance), the root cause of all suffering. This is not destruction for its own sake but the necessary clearing away of illusion to reveal eternal truth.
The tri-nayana form thus encapsulates the complete spectrum of divine power: creation through the cooling lunar eye, preservation through the sustaining solar eye, and transformation through the fiery eye of wisdom. These three aspects working in harmony maintain the cosmic order and guide sincere seekers toward liberation.
